Sleep is one of the most important requirements for physical and mental well-being. The lack of a good night's sleep can harm the body and increase its exposure to diseases. Melatonin is a chemical that is naturally secreted in the pineal gland, which sits in the brain where it acts as the body's "clock of life" and program the body's circadian rhythm. The production of melatonin is controlled by the light that hits the eye. At nighttime the production is at its highest - as a result thereof the body becomes tired. The production decreases during the light daytimes, when the body naturally becomes more alert and awake. Taking melatonin ½ - 1 hour before bedtime can help to calm the body and signals the brain that you are tired and you will therefore experience a natural, good and deep sleep. The amino acid tryptophan is absorbed from the diet and converted to serotonin and then to melatonin, which is secreted by the pineal gland (pineal gland). The body's own production of melatonin peaks at six years of age, drops sharply at puberty and then decreases with age. Melatonin is produced and secreted primarily when it is dark, where the production is maximal at between 2 and 3 am. When melatonin production increases, the body gets tired. It is estimated that in healthy young and middle-aged adults the pineal gland secretes between 5 and 25 micrograms of melatonin each night. Some things can interfere with this process. If, for example. one consumes alcohol, this will hinder the body's own production of melatonin.
